Invariance of the solid-liquid interfacial energy in electrowetting probed via capillary condensation.
Capillary condensation is employed to probe the solid-liquid interfacial energy in electrowetting on dielectric. The height of an annular water meniscus formed via capillary condensation inside the surface force apparatus is measured as a function of the potential applied across the meniscus and the dielectric stack where the meniscus is formed. According to the Kelvin equation, a decrease in t...
متن کاملMöbius Invariance of Knot Energy
A physically natural potential energy for simple closed curves in R3 is shown to be invariant under Möbius transformations. This leads to the rapid resolution of several open problems: round circles are precisely the absolute minima for energy; there is a minimum energy threshold below which knotting cannot occur; minimizers within prime knot types exist and are regular. Finally, the number of ...
متن کاملCapillary pumps for autonomous capillary systems.
Autonomous capillary systems (CSs), where liquids are displaced by means of capillarity, are efficient, fast and convenient platforms for many bioanalytical applications. The proper functioning of these microfluidic devices requires displacing accurate volumes of liquids with precise flow rates. In this work, we show how to design capillary pumps for controlling the flow properties of CSs. The ...
متن کاملCapillary inserts in microcirculatory systems.
Microfluidic loops (i.e. closed fluid paths) pose specific practical challenges such as priming, introducing analytes or reagents in a controlled way and sampling products. In this technical note we address these three issues using a removable part of the microchannel that we call a 'capillary insert'.
متن کاملInvariance of the correlation energy at high density and large dimension in two-electron systems.
We prove that, in the large-dimension limit, the high-density correlation energy Ec of two opposite-spin electrons confined in a D-dimensional space and interacting via a Coulomb potential is given by Ec∼-1/(8D2) for any radial confining potential V(r). This result explains the observed similarity of Ec in a variety of two-electron systems in three-dimensional space.
